King William III in 1694; background figure from a portrait by Faithorne of Robert Bruce; Earl of Ailesbury; in the time of James II. He wears an ornately embroiders jacket and coat over stockings and shoes. Handcolored engraving from 鈥楥ivil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period' drawn by Charles Martin and etched by Leopold Martin; London; Henry Bohn; 1842. The costumes were drawn from tapestries; monumental effigies; illuminated manuscripts and portraits. Charles and Leopold Martin were the sons of the romantic artist and mezzotint engraver John Martin (1789-1854).
