The Order of Constantine was said to have been founded in AD343 by the Roman emperor Constantine. It received its official rules and statutes in 1190 from Isaac-Angelus Commenus; Emperor of Constantinople; and was also known as the Order of Angelics; the Order of the Golden Knights; and the Constantinian Militia of St. George. It had three ranks of members: grand cross; knight and brother-servant.
