A papahou; flat treasure box; used to hold ornaments that had been worn on the head of a chief and were therefore tapu. The box was hung in the rafters of the house so the residents were not endangered by contact with its powerful contents. Country of Origin: New Zealand. Culture: Maori. Date / Period: 18th - 19th C.
