A performance of a life-sized puppet known as Si gale gale. Dressed in local ulos cloths the puppet danced and mourned as a substitute son at the funerals of men who died childless. Wet moss inside the head allowed the puppet to weep. A son was necessary for the deceased to live on among the ancestors. Country of Origin: Indonesia. Culture: Toba Batak. Date / Period: 1968.
