Jean-Louis. A mulatto, born in Haiti. (c1785-1865). Portrait. A soldier in the French army of Napoleon, he became a celebrated fencer. On one occasion he killed and wounded thirteen Italian soldiers in one bout. He refused a commission, retired from the army and opened a fencing school, teaching until his death.
