PACT - WITCHCRAFT - GRANDIER Facsimile of the pact allegedly signed by the French priest Urbain Grandier, circa 1634, with the demon Lucifer. Although clearly a forgery, this document was used as evidence against him, at his trial in Loudun in 1634. It contributed to his sentence, which was that he be tortured and burned alive. This pact makes an interesting comparison with that issued, in return, by the demons themselves, which was also written in Latin, but in mirror-image. The words Extractum ex inferis, bottom left, have been added by a later hand - perhaps during the trial. The pact was reproduced facsimile by Collin de Plancy, Dictionnaire Infernal, 1832, who claimed that the document came to him from the archives of Poitiers, where they were preserved before the French Revolution.
