GRIMOIRES - SEVEN ANGELS - OLYMPIC SPIRITS - TALISMANS In the occult tradition - and particularly in the grimoires - the Seven Angels are usually referred to as the Planetary Spirits, or Planetary Rulers, though the name in the esoteric tradition is Secundadeians. These seven are associated with the Olympic Spirits. The seven are identical in name to those dealt with by the esotericist Trithemius as the controllers of historical periods. According to Trithemius, we are presently living through the Age of Michael, the ruler of the Sun - a rule which began about 1881. This useful diagram of the Seven Planetary Rulers was published by Schiebel in his Faustbuch, and gives the names of the seven Archangels (for this is said to be their rank in the hierarchies), the name of the corresponding planetary spirit, and the corresponding talismanic sigil. In this diagram, Cassiel is the archangel of Saturn, and Aratron is the spirit of Saturn: his sigil is immediately below the name Aratron. [In the original talismanic design published by Schiebel, the talisman for Bethor was incorrectly drawn, and I have amended it, in this figure.] For a full modern survey of this tradition, see Adam McLean, A Treatise on Angel Magic, 1982.
