I CHING - HEXAGRAM No. 1 - CHIEN The first hexagram of the sacred Book of Changes, or I Ching, or The Book of Chou, used in China both for divination and as a source of philosophical enquiry. This double page from a tenth century Chinese printed blockbook sets out the hexagram, which consists of six straight lines - the trigrams Chien or Chien - followed by the traditional rationale pertaining to this meeting of the two trigrams. The title, Chien, is usually translated as 'The Creative', or 'The Heavenly'.
