WITCHCRAFT - DEVIL AND WITCHES - BOOK OF DEATH [Top] The delusion that witches can transform their bodies from one form to another - in this case, into a dog, a cat a snail. The authority on mediaeval witchcraft, Guazzo, argues that such transformations are effected by the Devil only as a deceptive process, and cannot be put into practise other than by such deception. See Chapter 13 of Guazzo's book (listed below). [Bottom] The witches have power to burn down houses and other properties. The example illustrated, and mentioned in particular by Guazzo, is the witchcraft that caused houses to be consumed by fire in the town of Suabia, in 1533. Illustrations from Francesco Maria Guazzo, Compendium Maleficarum, 1608.
