PHYSIOGNOMY - MERMAIDS The physiognomy and appearance of the sub-human monster Caliban, in this illustration by Robert Anning Bell (1863-1933) for Shakespeare's play, The Tempest (1901) fits all the requirements of the traditions attached to art of Physiognomy, but probably also owes something to the teaching of Darwin. The ape-like subhuman quality of Caliban is contrasted with the delicate semi-human mermaids, thus reflecting the dichotomy of Shakespeare's own Island theme.
