National Ignition Facility fusion device. Technicians using a service system lift to access the interior of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) target chamber for inspection and maintenance. The NIF is a laser-based inertial confinement fusion research device located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, California, USA. Construction took place from 1997, and the device has been completed since 2009. However, further work was needed over the following three years to bring it to around a tenth of its ignition power. More work still is needed to one day bring the system to ignition. Photographed on 7 July 2008.
