"Dolly" cloning technique (fifth of 5 pictures). Light micrograph of a sheep egg fused with an udder cell during cloning of "Dolly", the first sheep cloned from an adult cell. The egg cell reveals a nucleus (upper centre). The nucleus is from an udder cell. The egg cell had its nucleus removed, and an udder cell was injected into the egg. A spark of electricity then fused these cells into one and an embryo will be stimulated to grow. The embryo is implanted into the womb of a surrogate sheep. Research conducted by Dr Wilmut at the Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, Scotland. (see photos G285/037, G285/038, G285/039, G285/040).
