Family of Charles Richard Drew (1904-1950), US physician. Drew's dissertation in the 1930s was titled 'Banked Blood'. His work improved blood storage and blood transfusion, which helped save many lives during World War II. He was the first black surgeon to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery. Drew (left) married Lenore (Minnie Lenore Robbins, right) in 1939. Three daughters (Bebe Roberta, Charlene Rosella, Rhea Sylvia; left) were followed by a son (Charles Richard Junior; right). Photographed circa 1947 by the Harris and Ewing photographic studio. Drew would die three years later from wounds received in an automobile accident.
