Sarcoptes parasitic mites, coloured environmental scanning electron micrograph (ESEM). This mite reaches a length of between 0.25 and 0.4 millimetres. The female burrows into the skin and lays eggs. Infestation by this mite causes the skin condition scabies, with intense itching, particularly at night. Scratching results in the formation of scabs and sores.
