Gasterophilus parasitic fly larva, coloured environmental scanning electron micrograph (ESEM). This parasitic larve reaches a length of about 1.5 centimetres. The head and mouthparts (top centre) are surrounded by rings of chitinous protrusions. It attaches to the gastrointestinal mucosa with powerful hooks. The adult that develops from the larva is a fly that resembles a bee.
