Moss perichaetium. Light micrograph of a section through the perichaetium of a female moss (Mnium punctatum) plant, showing the archegonia (female reproductive organs) inside. The perichaetium is a bundle of modified leaves surrounding the archegonia. The archegonia produce the female gametes (ova, eggs) which fuse with the male antherozoids ('sperm') to ultimately form spores. Magnification: x37 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
