Early refrigerator, 19th-century artwork. This domestic mobile icebox cabinet is mounted on six wheels. Cool air is circulated from a pannier of ice (upper left) placed in the top of the cabinet. Holes in the interior panels allow the cool air to circulate. Meltwater drains into the basin below (centre left) and out through the tap on the side. Iceboxes like this were replaced by fridges based on coolants and electrics, developed for the domestic market in the early 20th century, though the technology was used in industry earlier. Artwork from the 19th volume (first period of 1897) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
