Political map of Antarctica. The sectors show the territories claimed by different nations. The largest sector on the right is claimed by Australia, and moving clockwise, the next areas are claimed by France, Australia again, and New Zealand, followed by a large unclaimed region, then a sector claimed by Chile. There are overlapping areas claimed by both Argentina and the United Kingdom, followed by a sector claimed by Norway. In 1961 the Antarctica Treaty was signed by all the nations claiming territory as well as several other countries. The treaty sets aside Antarctica as a military-free, protected area.
