Spine in Pott's disease. X-ray of a section through the spine of a 22-year-old patient with Pott's disease. Pott's disease causes the softening, collapse and inflammation of vertebrae (back bones). It is a secondary disease to tuberculosis (TB) and is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria moving from the lungs to the spine. Here, the vertebrae have softened and collapsed due to the infection, compressing the spinal cord.
