Dounreay nuclear reactor. This site in Caithness, Scotland, UK, first opened in 1955 for the development of fast reactors. The research program ceased in the 1990s and the last reactor shut down in 1994. The Dounreay site has been under the ownership of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority since 2005. Initial decommissioning will conclude in 2036, with the site made fully safe by 2336. Radioactive materials were detected on nearby Dunnet beach in 2009, resulting in ongoing monitoring and clean-up operations.
