Abstract polarised light micrograph of leaf hairs from the upper surface of an oleaster (Elaeagnus sp.) leaf merged with a cellophane food wrapper. The epidermal scales of the oleaster protect the leaves from dehydration and predation. They are present as a dense covering on the lower surface of the leaf while those on the upper surface are less abundant and more finely reticulated.
