Attack on German submarine U-175. US Coast Guardsmen on the deck of the USCGC Spencer (WPG-36) watching the explosion from a depth charge they have laid to attack a submarine. These depth charges damaged the German submarine (U-boat) U-175, forcing it to the surface where it was attacked further and sunk soon afterwards. Of the 54 crew of U-175, 13 were killed and 41 taken prisoner. The U-boat, part of the forces of Nazi Germany, was targeting ships in the convoy HX-233, seen in the background. This attack took place during World War II, on 17 April 1943, in the Atlantic Ocean south-west of Ireland. Photographed by Jack January.
