Herpes simplex virus infection. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Herpes simplex virus (HSV) particles (virions, round) in infected tissue. There are two types of Herpes simplex, HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 typically infects the nose, mouth and face, causing cold sores. HSV-2 typically infects the genitals, causing genital herpes. There is no cure for herpes simplex infection, but outbreaks can be treated with antiviral drugs.
