Light micrograph of a young colony of Coleochaete (Gr. koleos, sheat & Gr. chaite, long hair) sp. freshwater green alga on an "Aufwuchs"-slide, exposed 6 days in a garden pond in the botanic garden of Cologne. Coleochaete forms discoid colonies growing on water plant surfaces. Some Diatoms, genus Cocconeis, with the characteristic brownish chloroplasts are growing on the surface of the Coleochaete colony. Microscopic contrast method : Differential interference contrast. Magnification 380x when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
