Spinal ganglion. Light micrograph of a cross section through a spinal ganglion. Spinal ganglia are collections of nerve cells (neurones) on the dorsal roots of spinal nerves. Spinal ganglia contain no synapses. The ganglion is enclosed by a laminated connective tissue capsule (blue, at bottom). Nerve cell bodies of various sizes are to the inside of the capsule (round, purple). Each nerve cell body is surrounded by a single layer of flattened support cells called satellite cells (blue with black nuclei). Numerous nerve cell axons (pale, rounded) make up most of the upper frame. Spinal ganglia have a rich network of blood vessels. Stain and magnification unknown.
