Cooke and Wheatstone telegraph. 1868 illustration of men operating electric telegraph machines invented by William Fothergill Cooke and Charles Wheatstone in the 1830s. This early electric telegraph system was the first to be used commercially. Instead of earlier machines where the operator needed to learn codes, this device used a system of needles that could be moved to point at letters on a board to spell out messages.
