Fungal growth in an International Space Station in-flight surface sampler kit. These kits allows crew members to swab surfaces in the international Space Station (ISS) to monitor microbe levels. The swabs are wiped onto the nutrient gel in the container, and the container placed in an incubator for five days. Growth of fungal and bacterial colonies indicates microbial levels. Microbe levels in the air, water and on surfaces are monitored and maintained at acceptable levels by periodic scheduled sanitation routines.
