A female wolf spider, Pardosa amentata, with egg sac, basking on a plant of Hemerocallis (Day-lily). The picture shows the spider with its head facing downwards to the right; it shows two prominent pairs of eyes, the uppermost visible near the top front edge of the head, the other sited on the front of the face. Beneath the body of the spider is the egg sac (cream), which the female carries with her until the spiderlings emerge and move on to her back for protection. Wolf spiders are active hunters of prey and do not make webs. Wolf spiders appear frequently in gardens and are easily found in the summer months.
