Artwork of largest star UV Scuti compared to Sun. UY Scuti is located 9500 light years from Earth in the constellation Scutum. A red supergiant and pulsating variable, it is probably the largest star currently known, measuring around 1700 times the diameter of the Sun - about 16 astronomical units - and about 5 billion times the Sun's volume. If placed at the centre of our Solar System, UY Scuti would reach almost to the orbit of Saturn, possibly beyond. Next to UY Scuti the Sun is practically invisible - only the zoomed region, representing a magnification of 20 times, reveals the tiny disc of the Sun (yellow).
