Waldseemueller map gores. 16th-century set of 12 map gores showing the geography of the Earth according to German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller (c.1470-1520). Produced by Waldseemuller in 1507, this map contained the first use of the name America to refer to the New World, honouring the supposed discoverer of the continent, Amerigo Vespucci. The name 'America' is shown at lower right. This 1879 Austro-Hungarian republication is titled 'Erster gedruckter Globus' (First Printed Globe). The German text across top refers to Waldseemuller by his Latinized name of Martin Hylacomylus and gives an incorrect publication year of 1509. The place names are in Latin.
