XI LING-SHI (fl 2640 B.C.). Chinese empress of Huang Di. Xi Ling-Shi beside trays of silkworms. The empress is credited by the Chinese with the invention of the loom and silk reeling and according to legend, discovered silk when a cocoon dropped into her teacup.
