Around 1500 ammonites (90 percent Coroniceras multicostatum) are lithified in this limestone layer near Digne-le-Bains in Southern France. The biggest are 70 centimetres in diameter. Ammonites are the ancestors of living squids (Cephalopoda). They lived in the warm water of the ancient ocean called Tethys which disappeared during the orogeny of the Alps.
