Mont Blanc and Les Periades. Aerial view past the red granite needles of Les Periades towards Mont Blanc (4,809 m, background) in the Alps. Mont Blanc lies on the border of Italy and France and is the highest mountain in Europe. Les Periades were formed when parts of the Alps' base were pushed upward. The red granite of Les Periades and Mont Blanc was once a part of the primaeval desert on the Pangaea supercontinent, which was flooded by the Tethys Sea.
