David Livingstone (1813-1873). 1868 illustration of the Scottish explorer and medical missionary Dr David Livingstone (centre) at Lake Ngami, Africa in 1859. Livingstone is best known for his 'disappearance' whilst in Africa. He was eventually 'found' by Henry Stanley. Livingstone organised expeditions into the African interior from his base in Botswana. During an expedition along the Zambesi River he discovered and named the Victoria Falls, and reached the river's mouth. He mapped much of Africa's interior, wrote accounts of the native peoples, and campaigned against slavery. He died in Africa, where his heart was interred.
