The Anatomy of the Human Body. Title page of the fifth edition (1740) of 'The Anatomy of the Human Body' by English surgeon and anatomist William Cheselden (1688-1752). This book was first published in 1713 and was re-issued through 13 editions. It was popular due to being written in English instead of Latin. The illustration shows an anatomist drawing an illustration of a body part. Cheselden is named as Surgeon to His Majesty's Royal Hospital at Chelsea (King George II), a Fellow of the Royal Society (elected 1712), and a member of the Royal Academy of Surgeons at Paris. The 40 copper plate engravings were by Gerard Vandergucht (c.1696-1776).
