The village of Toll Bar near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, was one of many places hit by unprecedented floods in June 2007, after 5 inches (127 millimetres) of rain fell in 24 hours. The village was cut off for a week. The summer floods hit thousands of people and cost the government and insurance industry billions. Global warming is likely to lead to far more frequent extreme weather events like this , with low lying areas becoming increasingly vulnerable.
