Slinky spring stepping off a stack of books. This toy is a pre-compressed helical spring with low stiffness in the longitudinal direction. It can be used to demonstrate a wide variety of physical phenomena. The combination of low spring constant and momentum result in tricks' such as the apparent ability to walk' down a flight of stairs. The Slinky was invented by US naval engineer Richard James in 1944
