Aerial photograph of the Matterhorn. One of the highest (at 4478 metres) and the most prominent peaks in the Alps, the Matterhorn, is a piece of Africa. Once upon a time the huge rock, formed to a horn by glaciers during the Ice Age, was a part of the primeval African continental base. During the Alpine orogeny it was shoved above the marine sediment layers off the European coast.
