Medieval surgery, 15th-century illustration. Surgeon attending to a patient with two millstones below. This may refer to a treatment described by Galen where a red-hot millstone is quenched in vinegar, and surgery or other painful treatments carried out after the patient is exposed to the resulting vapours. This coloured woodcut is from an edition of 'Hortus sanitatis' (Garden of Health), printed in the German city of Mainz by Jacob Meydenbach. Also called 'Ortus Sanitatis', this work contained treatises on plants, animals and medicinal treatments, and was first published in 1491.
