Samuel Clegg (1781-1861). 1865 illustration of the British civil engineer and inventor Samuel Clegg showing his gasometer storage tank to members of the Royal Society. Clegg served his apprenticeship under James Watt. After leaving Watts he invented a gas meter, a gasometer and a machine that used lime to purify coal gas.
