Hesperornis prehistoric bird. Computer illustration of a Hesperornis sp. prehistoric bird. This large flightless aquatic bird lived around 84 to 78 million years ago, during the first half of the Campanian age of the Late Cretaceous period (around 100 to 66 million years ago), in what is now North America. It had tiny, almost non-existent wings, and swam using its powerful legs.
