The Drunkard's Progress. 19th-century illustration of four stages of alcoholism, or 'the direct road to poverty, wretchedness and ruin'. The first stage (far left) is 'the morning dram', with a father drinking at 8am, ignoring his wife and children. The second stage (centre left) is 'the grog shop', with a bar room brawl. The third stage (centre right) is 'the confirmed drunkard', with the father on the floor, his wife and children afraid, and the home falling apart. The fourth stage (far right) shows the family evicted, with the home up for auction. Published in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, by John Warner Barber (1798-1885) on 9 September 1826.
