R100 airship moored at Cardington, UK. Constructed at Howden, this airship first flew on 16 December 1929 to the Royal Airship Works at Cardington, Bedfordshire. After a series of trial flights, it made a successful return crossing of the Atlantic in July and August 1930. It was made from duralumin, carried over 100, and was 219 metres long. It was one of a pair of airships built the Imperial Airship Scheme competition. R100 was built by the Airship Guarantee Company. The other, R101, was built by the Air Ministry. After R101 crashed in October 1930, R100 was scrapped in November 1931 after the Imperial Airship Scheme was abandoned.
