Investigating weight bouncing on spring. Apparatus used to investigate the effect of damping on spring oscillations. Here, a weight is bounced on a spring with a datalogging laptop and ultrasonic motion sensor set up in line with the bounce underneath to produce a displacement graph. Usually the results produce a sine curve. However, here a small piece of card (white) is attached horizontally to the bottom of the weight to act as air resistance, giving a small amount of damping. This produces a sine curve that slowly decreases (on screen). This is a demonstration of a Hooke's Law.
