Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Portion of hieroglyphic text written for a man called Mentuhotep, governor of the district of Armant in Ancient Egypt's Middle Kingdom (2024-1700 BC). Hieroglyphics were a system of pictorial writing invented in Egypt around 3000 BC. The symbols may represent the objects they depict but usually stand for a sound or group of sounds.
