Blackberry gall on blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) plant. Gall of the Diastrophus rubi wasp on a blackberry (bramble) plant. Galls are formed when the adult wasp lays its eggs inside the leaf's tissue. When they hatch, the larvae secrete chemicals that cause the leaf's tissue to grow a protective 'bubble' (gall) around them. This is an old gall from which the adult wasps have emerged.
