Close up abstract of mature red cushion fungus (Hypoxylon fragiforme) clustered on a dead branch in a Norfolk wood. The surface is minutely bumpy at maturity. The bumps are the openings of ascospore-forming structures called perithecia embedded just below the surface. The interior flesh is black and hard.
