Sickbed consultation. 16th-century illustration of a doctor, an alchemist and the alchemist's assistant, attending to a sick man in his bed. The elaborate design of the bed indicates that the sick man is wealthy. Medicine jars are on the shelf behind the men. The doctor would diagnose the illness and the alchemist would prepare remedies for the patient. This is a page from 'Liber de arte distillandi de compositis' (1512), published in Strasbourg by German surgeon and alchemist Hieronymus Brunschwig (c.1450-c.1512). This work is a practical manual on chemical, alchemical, and distillation devices, and techniques used to manufacture potions and drugs.
