Potentiometer and sliding key. Potentiometers are a type of variable resistor. This is a linear potentiometer. Moving the sliding key (jockey, lower centre) from one end to the other varies the resistance across its contacts. Potentiometers are used in devices such as light dimmers and volume controls.
