Illustration of the British military cemetery in the grounds of the Scutari Barracks (in background), Istanbul, Turkey, during the Crimean War (1853-1859). The Scutari Barracks was allocated to the British military during the war and was converted into a military hospital. Between 1854 and 1857 the hospital was overseen by Florence Nightingale. Approximately 6000 soldiers died in the hospital, mostly from infections, and were buried in the grounds.
